A place that touches your soul
There are places that stay with you forever.
And sometimes, the most magical ones aren’t far away — they’re right next to home, just waiting to be discovered.
A personal journey
I’ve been living in England for seven years. I’m 48 now, and I’ve always been a river person. Water calms me, cleanses me from the inside, and grounds me. But in all this time, I had never visited the Narrows of the Guadalmina River, even though they’re just a stone’s throw from my hometown.
It was thanks to my brother and his friends — the ones who appear with me in the video — that I finally went.
When you travel back home from so far away, you try to manage your time: catch up with family, rest a bit… and sometimes you forget your soul also needs its moment.
And that day, my soul found its moment.
It wasn’t just about slowing down — it was about coming back to life.
It brought me back to the feelings of my youth. That deep connection with nature, with silence, with inner peace. Feeling the river on my skin again… like a long-awaited hug.
And suddenly, that song by Enrique Iglesias and Juan Luis Guerra popped into my head:
“Cuando me enamoro, se detiene el tiempo, se me viene el alma al cuerpo…”
(“When I fall in love, time stops, and my soul comes back to my body…”) “Hey, listen up!”
Because I didn’t just fall in love with the landscape…
I fell back in love with myself.
Why the Guadalmina River is so magical
A natural treasure shaped by time
The Angosturas del río Guadalmina (Guadalmina Narrows) are a stretch of river carved over centuries by the erosive power of water cutting through limestone.
This has created an awe-inspiring gorge, full of crystal-clear pools, waterfalls, narrow canyons and shady areas surrounded by wild vegetation. It’s a small natural wonder of southern Spain.
A special kind of energy
Whether you go solo, with family or friends, there’s something in this place that grounds you. The water, the rocks, the sound of the river — they all connect you to something older, something pure.
It’s not about rushing. It’s about feeling.
Let the current guide you. Let the silence speak to you.
And let your soul come back to your body.
What’s the walk like?
How long is the route?
The route can take between 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes if you’re walking briskly. But the idea is to let yourself go — if you’re stopping for swims, laughs, and photos (which you will!), it can easily stretch to 2 hours or more.
The route is mostly linear — you go and return the same way.
You’ll find natural pools, small waterfalls, and narrow passages between rocks.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes, but it’s important to note:
-
There are sections that require walking through the water (sometimes waist-deep).
-
Some rocks can be slippery, and the current in certain parts may be strong, especially after rains.
-
Young children should always be accompanied, preferably with flotation aids.
That said, older kids love the adventure and exploring nature like little explorers.
A little story from my childhood
I remember exactly where this love for rivers comes from.
It’s rooted in childhood, in the times my grandfather used to take us to the Genal River. He taught us how he grew up around water — fishing, finding the best swimming spots, making traps with reeds.
Back then, before technology had taken over, kids played with sticks, stones and imagination. And those moments left a mark on me.
That’s why, to this day, I’m more drawn to rivers than beaches. Lakes, reservoirs, flowing streams… they all give me peace.
And now, every time I go back to Estepona with my family, we make time for river adventures — with my nephews, with my daughter.
And this magical walk through the Guadalmina Narrows is one I can’t wait to do again with them.
What to bring
-
Good footwear: Water shoes or trainers you don’t mind getting wet.
-
Sun protection: Hat, sunscreen and sunglasses.
-
Swimsuit and towel: You’ll definitely want to take a dip.
-
Water and snacks: There are no services during the route.
-
A dry bag for your phone and camera.
Do you need a reservation?
No reservation is required — this is a public natural area.
But it’s always good to check the water level and the weather conditions before you go, especially after heavy rain.
But if there’s one place where you should make a reservation…
It’s at a good restaurant in Benahavís, just a few minutes away — known as one of the best gastronomic spots in Andalusia.
It’s the perfect way to end a magical day with a golden touch.
A shared memory
Now every year, my nephews count the days:
“When is Uncle Dany coming back?” they ask.
Because they know that when I come home, we’ll head straight to the river.
And it’s not just about fun — it’s about creating lasting memories, those shared moments that only nature can offer.
So if you go with family, your partner, your children or close friends, I can promise you this:
You’ll come back not only refreshed, but forever changed — holding onto a special energy that only places like this can give.
Final thoughts
If you ever visit the Costa del Sol, don’t miss this hidden gem.
Let the Guadalmina River surprise you.
Let it stop time for you.
Let it bring your soul back to your body.
